Council of Student Leaders is working with Carolinas Cab Company to offer affordable transportation to students without cars.
The Council recently recognized students' needs for transportation and created a committee addressing the issue.

A recent suicide attempt on campus leaves Winthrop with eight to 12 suicide attempts or serious threats this semester alone, a range that is not uncommon, said Bethany Marlowe, dean of students.

"It's about depression, feeling hopeless, the feeling of things piling up and falling apart," Marlowe said.

Picture war veterans as battle-scarred, war-battered, rambling-on old men? Then take a look at Melissa Knudstrup, a philosophy major at Winthrop. You might be pretty surprised.

She keeps an unexpected secret, well barred behind her fierce and challenging green eyes.

Every morning, Brady Darity performs the usual "get ready for class" tasks.

He brushes his teeth like every other student. He puts on clothes like every other student. He grabs his book bag and heads for class, like every other student.

But there is one thing he does differently from a typical student: he picks up his fourth generation iPod with 20 gigabytes of space, sticks it into his Logitech mm50 speakers and perches the set on his shoulder, blasting his music for all of campus to hear.
Look out for the school's new official logo, unveiled at a recent board meeting, intended to give the campus some consistency with its changes.

The logo will show up soon among the new West Center outdoor seating area, pedestrian walkways, awnings, banners and memorabilia at the Bookworm.

Sullivan Middle School, located right down the road from Winthrop University, holds students in grades six through eight.

But don't be surprised if you see a Winthrop student's car in the parking lot.

That's because Winthrop students enrolled in Spanish 340C travel to the middle school once a week to teach English to the immigrant children whose mother tongue is Spanish.

In France, to enjoy eating is almost a religion.

Cheese, bread and wine build an inescapable holy trinity, backed up by their numerous meal apostles.

The French are able to spend hours for lunch, even businessmen. Most spend twice as much money on food as Americans, preferring often to improve their quality of life rather than save money.

It's that time of year. You know, where the old editor steps down and the new one steps up. I'm the one doing the stepping down.
The most difficult part of this year has been balancing my time with the paper and school work.
I have to admit that at first, I thought some of the required classes I had to take were ridiculous.

Manners have always been important to me. Maybe it was the constant drilling from the parents growing up. Maybe it was people I surrounded myself with rubbing off and landing on or around me.
Who knows, maybe it was a really good movie I saw one time. It would seem that in a civilized society one would rely heavily on manners as a way to communicate politely and offer what in any other time would be considered status quo as far as courtesy was concerned.

As the Democratic primaries drag through another month, we are left to wonder how and when they will end. Though Barack Obama has a sizable lead in both delegates and superdelegates, Senator Clinton's fierce desire for the presidency prompts her to insist that her chances for a come-from-behind victory are still strong.

Many technologies are being made available to the public more readily all the time. A few years ago, only people with extremely fast-paced jobs carried cellular phones. Now someone without one is considered backwards.
As hard as it is to believe, at one time we did not need to know where our loved ones were every few minutes.

Freshman year of high school I had it all planned out: I would go to technical school get a degree in some obscure field, such as cosmetology, work awhile and maybe open my own shop after I advanced. Eventually, I would retire and die a happy person.
College was never really an option and never once crossed my mind.

Bill Could Allow Firearms on Campus In S.C.

I just wanted to point out how one-sided the article about concealed weapons on campus is.
First of all, the only way someone can carry a concealed weapon is if they have successfully passed an eight-hour proficiency test and is registered through the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED).

Learning to fly is an expensive endeavor because you have to pay the instructor and go to ground school in addition to paying to rent the plane.

Somewhere between getting the free CDs and interviewing artists like Hanson, I realized I was in entertainment editor heaven.

Now, as this is my final column in our final issue of the spring semester of my final year at Winthrop. . . I realize just how final this ending is.

Not Just Skin Deep

The connotation of the words "skin deep" is one that doesn't go beyond the surface. It's simple and basic.

Keeping this mind, it's an ironic name for Winthrop's newest organization, considering the group does the complete opposite.

Despite its title, Skin Deep is a new acting improvisational group on campus that explores all kinds of issues that people deal with, from alcoholism to abuse to drug use.

David Kenga, a Winthrop soccer player, has always looked to the Bible for motivation. His favorite verse is Mark 12:10.

"The stone that the builders rejected turned out to be the chief cornerstone."

This Bible verse has always motivated David Kenga to keep going.
