CONWAY, S.C. -- The Winthrop baseball team split results in a doubleheader at 21st-ranked Coastal Carolina as the Chanticleers took game one 5-1 and the Eagles came back to win game two 8-1 Sunday afternoon at Vrooman Field in Conway, SC.
The Eagles are now 12-19 and 3-3 in the Big South, while Coastal is 24-7 overall and 4-2 in league play.
In game one the Eagles actually out hit the Chanticleers six to three, but all of the Coastal hits were home runs.
Freshman left-hander Hamilton Bennett started the first game and was tagged with the loss as he allowed five runs on three hits, three walks and five strikeouts.
Freshman right-hander Robert Lake finished the game as he tossed a scoreless inning.
All Eagle batters were anchored by freshman outfielder Tony Brunetti, who went three for four. Senior outfielder Billy Froehlich had his hitting streak extended to nine games as he picked up a single in three official plate appearances.
Coastal's right-hander Joey Haug made his first of the season and got the win working 7.0 innings giving up no runs on four hits two walks and seven strikeouts.
"Hamilton pitched a great ball game," Joe Hudak, Winthrop skipper, said."They didn't leave anybody on base. It was probably the first time I've seen a team not leaving anybody on base. Their pitcher Haug threw very well. We didn't make any adjustments. They are a very good ball club. They took advantages of the opportunities they had."
Adam Rice, Rico Noel and Jose Iglesias hit the Coastal home runs in the game.
In game one, after Bennett retired the first eight batters, Coastal got on the board with a two-out solo home run by Noel.
After Bennett issued two walks in the fourth inning, Iglesias sent both runners home via the round tripper making it a 4-0 game. The Chanticleers got another home run to stretch the lead to 5-0 in the sixth frame.
The Eagles would get on the board in the ninth inning as sophomore catcher John Murrian grounded out into a double play with the bases loaded.
In game two, the Eagles were pretty much in control from early in the game as they scored two runs in the second and never looked back. The Eagle pitching staff was also solid as it limited the Chanticleers to one run.
"It was obviously a big win for us," Hudak said. "You don't want to get swept on the road. We've played at VMI and at Coastal and we're coming back 3-3, which isn't bad and I thought we played well in all the games. Coastal has a great club, but we swung the bats well against McCully today. They deserve to be ranked where they are, so it was a good win for us."
