The Winthrop track team hosted the Asics / Winthrop Invitational over the weekend and set four school records in the process to go along with numerous top three finishes.
The first record to fall came from the hands of Travis Coleman in the shot put. His toss of 53 feet, 1 inch broke the school record that had stood since 2004. He took second in the event.
Rebecca Holmes broke the record for 100-meter hurdles. Her time of 14.53 in the prelims broke the previous mark that had been set in 2005. She went on to come in seventh in the finals.
Ashley Howard broke her own school record in the discus. Her toss of 158 feet, 8 inches made her the top finishing college thrower and second overall.
The oldest record to fall was in the 10,000-meter run. Carey Phillips covered the 25 laps in 37 minutes and 31 seconds to win the race and break the seven-year-old record.
Two other Eagles won their respective events over the weekend. Matt Elliot won the 800-meter run with a time of 1 minute and 52.02 seconds. Keary Simms won the triple jump with a mark of 46 feet, 9 inches.
Other Eagles who finished in the top three were Brooke Spencer (second in the 10,000-meter run), Jared Baird (second in the Javelin), Felicia Boulware (second in the shot put), Jason Williams (second in the high jump), Casey Lyons (third in the 1500 meter run), Trevor Beesley third n the 5000-meter run) and Tyler Hudgins third in the 3000-meter steeplechase)
The Winthrop track team will be at Duke University this weekend and return home from April 17 through 19 when they host the Big Sout Conference Outdoor Track
Championships.
