The Lady Eagles trailed by two strokes heading into the final round and actually gained a stroke on Charleston Southern, the leader through the first two rounds. But it was Murray State that made the jump of the day by overcoming an 11-stroke deficit in the final round to capture first place.
Murray State's final round of 306, the second lowest team round for all three days, included a 75 by Bethany Yates and Alexandra Hinteregge. Joyce Trus shot a 76 and Andrea Downer shot an 80.
Senior Jutta Degerman finished second overall, just two strokes behind Susannah Aboff of Princeton. Degerman shot a 73 in the final round, but Aboff hung on strong with a 74 to earn the medalist honors. Michelle Grilli of Princeton finished third and Rhiannon Loebs of Charleston Southern finished fourth. Sarah Hester jumped two spots in the final round and finished fifth overall.
"I started off good, but struggled a little in the middle round and then finished strong," Degerman said. "Susannah didn't mess up on any holes and played a great tournament. It all came down to the final round and it was fun competing with her today."
Junior Brittany Dabule shot a final round 79 to move up to a tie for 24th, and sophomore Rachel Smith finished tied for 38th.
"It was a very successful
tournament," Head Coach Jodi Wendt said. "Jutta Degerman had another strong performance for Winthrop. It was a good way to end her last Shamrock. Sarah Hester was her steady self and we had a shot to win it, but unfortunately we didn't play our best on the last day. There is always next year. This year did see some of the lowest individual scores in the tournament's history."
Winthrop will have one more tournament before the Big South Conference Championship starts on April 14. The Lady Eagles will head to Richmond, Ky. from Apr. 2-5 to play in the Eastern Kentucky University Spring Invitational.
