The Winthrop Eagles improved their record to 6-5 this weekend in the Hokie United Memorial Tournament in Salem, Va. They defeated Rutgers and St. Joseph's on Saturday and Troy on Sunday.
Their 3-0 loss to VT in the championship game left the Eagles as second overall in the tournament. On the first day of play the Eagles flexed their offensive muscle outscoring Rutgers 4-1 and St. Joseph's 8-2.
The Eagles got a strong start in the fourth inning putting two runs on the board. A double from centerfielder Tessa Thomas was followed by an RBI single from right fielder Lisa Kingsmore. Shortstop Stephanie Reid kept things going with a sacrifice bunt that yielded a throwing error from the Scarlet Knights, allowing Kingsmore to score. The Eagles added some insurance in the top of the seventh when Lenny Stoddart, pinch hitting for Sarah Magee, hit a two-run double to score Erica Spradley and Katie Smith.
Eagle defense along with pitcher Megan Evans took care of the Scarlet Knights allowing just 4 hits. Evans struck out five hitters and walked just three. Izzy Trottier closed the deal in the seventh inning for the Eagles to earn her seventh career save. The day just got better for the Eagles as they conquered St. Joseph's with 13 hits producing eight runs.
The Eagles took control in the first two innings. A shaky Hawks defense allowed Thomas to score in the first inning. The Eagles were consistent, with two RBIs from Thomas and Reid in the fourth and two from Pearl Coleshill and Kingsmore in the seventh. Mallory Hoganâs shot in the fifth inning found its way over the fence to give her her second homerun this season and the tenth in her career.
Cari Wooldridge performed well on the mound for the Eagles allowing six hits, one walk and striking out five. Trottier came in to earn the save in the seventh inning allowing just one hit. The Eagle's momentum continued on Sunday as they shut down Troy 4-2. Evans handled Trojan hitters fairly easily sitting 9 hitters down and giving up only three hits and one walk. Kingsmore, Reid, and Magee also contributed offensively with one RBI each.
The Eagles were not, however, able to carry their offensive power into the championship game. They fell to VT 3-0, able to generate just two hits against Hokie pitcher Angela Tincher, who is recognized as one of the top pitchers in collegiate softball in the country. Coleshill had a single but was caught stealing. Kingsmore managed a double but the rest of the Eagle offense couldn't find a hit.
The Eagles had a late game opportunity to score in the seventh with Kingsmore on third but were denied with two stikeouts from Tincher. Wooldridge allowed six hits and gave up just four walks from the mound.
