The beginning of baseball season was scheduled for a Friday afternoon prior to the Davidson basketball game, but with rainy conditions the Eagles home opener of the Johnny Gill Memorial was delayed a day where Winthrop played against the Evansville Purple Aces.

The Eagles opened the tournament format with a bang, crushing Evansville 11-1 on Saturday, Feb. 23

Senior Ryan Schwartz (1-0, 1.50 ERA) got the nod as the winning pitcher going for six innings with five strikeouts and only allowing five hits, one earned run and two walks.

The Eagles were led by sophomore shortstop Kevin Nolan who went 4-4 with two runs, four hits and six RBIs.

On day two, Winthrop faced an up hill battle against an experienced St. John's Red Storm as the Eagles fell short of a comeback attempt, losing 4-3.

The Red Storm came out swinging when they put two runs on the board in the first inning.

Freshman Fort Mill native Hamilton Bennett (0-1, 4.26 ERA) gave up those two runs, but after the first inning composed himself to pitch for an additional 5.1 innings, and finishing with four strikeouts, two walks and three earned runs.

Nolan again provided the bulk of the Eagles offense as he went 2-5 with two RBI.

In the final game of the tournament, the Eagles took the bite out of the Bulldogs of Gardner-Webb winning 17-5.

The sixth inning proved to be the most productive inning of the game as every Eagle got a chance to bat and as a result six runs were brought in to seal the game.

Senior Billy Tisdale (1-0, 3.00 ERA) got the win with five strikeouts and only allowing two earned runs and one walk.

Sophomore catcher John Murrian and freshman designated hitter Eddie Rohan both had noteworthy performances as both players went 4-4. Murrian produced three runs and one RBI. Rohan produced four runs and three RBIs.

"I think the team did real well," catcher John Murrian said. "We hit the ball real well. Our pitchers came out and did their jobs."

Head Coach Joe Hudak also liked what he saw in the first set of games of the season.

"I think we had a good weekend," Hudak said. "Two out of three anytime, we'll take that all year if we can do that every weekend; especially when you're playing good clubs."
