The Lady Eagles are racking up on their wins and not looking back. The Eagles defeated the High Point Panthers 65-47 on Saturday, Feb. 16. The ladies improved to 17-9 overall and 5-3 in the Big South. The Eagles are currently resting at the number two spot in the Big South Conference.
If the Eagles win 20 games and obtain the number two seed, they will be able to get an N.I.T. (National Invitation Tournament) bid. If this is done, it will be the first time in history that the Lady Eagles have ever achieved that accomplishment.
On Saturday the Lady Eagles held a tight grip on their leads as they fought to remain ahead of High Point throughout the game. The Eagles were ahead 31-22 at the half.
The team's chemistry is working in their favor as they work to climb their way to the top.
"We really played as a team today." said junior guard Yvonne Van Daalen.
"We're doing so much better. We trust in another another. "
Junior guard Tiffany Rodd contributed a total of 22 points to the game, 14 of those points being made in the first half. Rodd is currently the Choice Hotel's Women's Basketball Player of the Week in the Big South. The big announcement was made Monday Feb. 18. This is Rodd's second player of the week honor this season.
Another key figure in the Winthrop v. High Point game was junior center Jennifer Walker. Walker contributed her career best of 15 points to the win. She is now 105 points shy of 1,000 for her career.
Junior guard Franchesca Davenport finished with eight points while junior guard Ashley Fann added seven points and 11 rebounds. Fann is now number 11 on Winthrop's all-time career list with 579 rebounds.
The Lady Eagles will travel to Conway to play Coastal Carolina on Feb. 23 and then return to battle Liberty Feb. 27 at 7 p.m.
