For the second straight indoor track meet, Ashley Howard won her event and Matt Elliot broke a school record. It highlighted a number of good performances by Winthrop at the Akron Open.

Howard won the discus throw with a toss of 155 feet and 6 inches, winning by 16 feet. Her toss was only 4 feet short of her outdoor discus record.

Elliot captured second in the 800 meter run with a time of 1:52.48, breaking the indoor school record he set two wees ago. For good measure, Elliot would later team up with Daryl Green, Phil Jennings and Theo Facinoli to break the school record from 2002 in the 4 X 400 meter relay with a time of 3:21.27.

Green also had a productive meet, coming in 6th in the open 400 meter dash with a time of 48.52.

Jason Williams tied the indoor school record in the high jump when he leapt 6 feet, 8 inches. The performance got Williams 3rd place in the event.

Sara Young also had a good day for the Eagles. She came in 4th in the triple jump with a mark of 35 feet, 7.75 inches. She also came in 10th in the 60 meter hurdles with a time of 9.15, missing out on finals by one 100th of a second.

Carey Philips rounded out Winthrop's solid performances with an 11th place finish in the 5000 meter run with a time of 18 minutes and 20 seconds.
