FORT COLLINS, CO - The Winthrop volleyball team lost both its matches in the final day of the Hilton Classic as it dropped a five-game marathon to Miami (OH) and was defeated by host Colorado State in four games.

In the first match of the day, the Eagles (1-8) gave the Redhawks (3-5) all they could handle as Miami picked up a 30-23, 26-30, 30-28, 31-33, 15-11 decision.

Junior middle hitter Shannon Sitzmann was the pillar of the Winthrop offense one more time as she collected 22 kills, a new career high. Sophomore right side Kelley Taylor and freshmen, outside hitter Kellie Sellers and middle hitter Kaley Viola, were also in double figures for the category. Sellers also captured 11 digs to add another double-double to her season stats. Freshman setter Kelsey Hall also picked up a double-double as she provided 57 assists and 13 digs. Junior defensive specialist Pohai Nu'uhiwa led the team in that department with her 23 digs.

"We played a great match against Miami, but we need to keep working on finishing off close games," said Winthrop head coach Sally Polhamus.

Later on the day, the Eagles took on host Colorado State falling 30-23, 28-30, 30-19, 30-18.

Against the Rams (5-3), the Eagles had double-digit kill performances from Sitzmann, who was appointed to the All-Tournament Team, and Sellers with Hall assisting 35 times. Nu'uhiwa grabbed 19 digs and was the only Eagle in double figures on the defense.

"We just need to keep on maturing," said Polhamus. "We now look forward to play at home next weekend."

After nine straight matches on the road, the Eagles finally open their home schedule as they host the Wingate Invitational at the Winthrop Coliseum. The Eagles play Mercer at 7:30 p.m. on Friday and square off against Troy at 10 a.m. and Georgetown at 7 p.m. Saturday.
