On Friday, Sept. 14, the Winthrop men's soccer team will host the Georgia Southern Eagles in the first game of the annual Wingate Inn Classic. Game time is at 7:30 p.m.

Last season Georgia Southern had 10 wins, six losses and three ties. They made it to the Southern Conference Championship game where they lost to UNC-Greensboro 3-0.

Their coach, Kevin Kennedy, was named Southern Conference Coach of the Year for the 2006 season. He will be entering his second season as Georgia Southern head coach.

Georgia Southern opened their 2007 season at the Appalachian State University Classic, where they beat Big South opponent VMI 2-0 but lost to Western Illinois 1-0.

Georgia Southern returns 16 players from last season, but only five of them were starters.

Junior forward Daniel Smith is their top returning player. Last year he had three goals and three assists. This year he has been named to the All-Southern Conference Preseason team.

Midfielder Julian Donaldson scored three goals last season while appearing in every game for Georgia Southern.

Leading the defense that had eight shutouts last year will be Kim Kroken, who started every game last year for the Eagles.

On Sunday, Sept. 16, Winthrop will wrap up the Wingate Inn Classic against the Gardner-Webb Runnin' Bulldogs, who will join the Big South Conference in 2008. Game time is at 2:30 p.m. at the Winthrop Soccer Complex.

Last year the Bulldogs were 9-8-4 with a 4-6 record away from home. Coached by Tony Setzer, Gardner-Webb won the Atlantic Sun Conference Championship last season, the first in school history. They went on to defeat UAB on penalty kicks in the first round of the NCAA tournament, before losing to Clemson in the second round 3-1.

Winthrop and Gardner-Webb played last season with Winthrop winning 5-0. The Bulldogs opened up the 2007 season with a tie to Big South opponent High Point and losses to Clemson (3-1) and another Big South member VMI, (4-2).
