On September 7, Winthrop heads back to North Carolina to take on the Western Carolina Catamounts. Last season they were 10-8-3 overall with a record of four wins, four losses, and one tie at home. They played one Big South opponent last year, beating UNC Asheville 3-0. This will be the first ever meeting between Winthrop and Western Carolina in women's soccer.
Returning for the Catamounts are 17 players from last year's squad. Their top goal scorer from last season, Heather Dittmer, is returning for her senior campaign. Also returning is Shanna Schmoker, who tied for second on the team in goals. Arlan Whittle led the team last season in assists with five, and she is also returning. Both Schmoker and Whittle were named to the All-SoCon Tournament Team, while Dittmer was named to the NCCSIA All-State Women's Soccer Team. Coached by Tammy DeCesare, the Catamounts enter the season ranked 19th in the southeast region out of 54 teams.
The Winthrop women's soccer team has a tough task at hand when they travel to Columbia on September 12 to take on the Gamecocks.
Believe it or not, this will be the first ever meeting between the two teams in women's soccer. USC is 8-0 all-time against Big South Opponents.
The Gamecocks were 11-6-5 last year and were undefeated at home with a record of 8-0-3. They also set a school record for goals-against-average last year with 0.69. Coming into this year, the Gamecocks are ranked sixth in the southeast region and are listed as also receiving votes in the national polls.
While the Gamecocks lose their leading goal scorer from last year, nine other starters return for South Carolina from last year. Goalkeeper Laura Armstrong, who had a goals-against-average of .70 last year, will make it tough to score. Ashley Kirk, who had three goals and three assists last year, will look to control the middle of the field. The teams second leading goals scorer from last year, Annie Galloway, also returns. South Carolina coach Shelley Smith will be in season 7 as Gamecock coach.
