A cross left from Chelsea White ended up off of the head of Erin Foote and into the Patriot goal in the 32nd minute in the first half.
Francis Marion wasted no time coming into the second half. A Taylor Jenkins kick ended up in the Eagles' net a mere 30 seconds into the half.
With 1:30 left in the game the Patriots began a charge. This charge ended up with a Francis Marion shot bouncing off of the crossbar. As the seconds ticked down Winthrop began their march.
With 35 seconds left, sophomore Stevie Lucas was fouled 20 yards away from the Patriot goal. The kick was taken by Foote. Her high right side shot was snatched out of the air by the Patriot's goal keeper, but the Eagles were not done.
With the seconds reaching the teens, the Eagles pushed a little harder. Within 15 yards the Eagles took three shots on the goal. The ball bounced around from player to player, each either attempting a shot or trying to find someone that had a clear shot.
The Eagles tried to no avail and ended up with a tie.
"I am pleased with their effort, I am pleased with their drive, and it was exciting," Head coach, Melissa Heinz, said. "We just need to heal and rest and come back and play like we did today."
Even though this was the first ever match-up between the two in-state teams, head coach of the Patriots, Marty Beall, already considers this to be a rivalry.
"We're going to enjoy playing against each other for years to come," Beall said.
The Lady Eagles again tied against Appalachain State this past Monday. The team is now 0-0-2 in the season and their next game is at Western Carolina.
