DeAndre Adams, a sophomore Sociology major and backup point guard for Winthrop's basketball team, died Wednesday morning at the Atlanta Medical Center in Atlanta, Ga.
He was 20.
He suffered a head injury Saturday morning in an automobile accident near his hometown of Austell, Ga., just five minutes from home. Adams swerved to avoid hitting a fallen tree, and his vehicle flipped several times before hitting another tree. It took rescue personnel 45 minutes to free Adams from his vehicle.
He was wearing his seat belt.
Doctors placed Adams into a drug-induced coma to contain the swelling in his brain. He took a turn for the worse Tuesday night. Adams would have been a junior this fall.
“This is a very sad day for Winthrop University basketball,” said head coach Randy Peele. “DeAndre was a fan favorite of the Winthrop University faculty and students. He had a vibrant personality and he lived his life with great passion and enthusiasm. We will miss DeAndre a great deal. Our lives have been blessed because of having DeAndre Adams as part of our basketball family.”
Adams’ funeral arrangements have not been finalized.
Winthrop University officials are planning a campus wide memorial ceremony that will take place some time after funeral services in Georgia.
