Eagles look to win fifth straight conference title

The Winthrop volleyball team finished off its undefeated conference season with a 3-0 victory over the High Point Panthers Friday evening at the Winthrop Coliseum.
The Eagles finished the regular season with a 30-2 overall record and a 14-0 conference record.
In game one, the Eagles came out strong, taking an early 10-5 lead. High Point tried to get back into the game, but the Eagles were resilient to the Panther attack.
Winthrop extended their lead to eight points at 20-12 and finished off game one by 10 points at 30-20.
In game two, the Eagles stepped it up defensively and forced the Panthers to commit 11 errors and have a -.022 attack percentage. Winthrop held a 10-4 lead early and continued the offensive pressure.
The Eagles increased their lead to 10 points at 20-10 and completed game two with a 14 point lead at 30-16.
In game three, the Eagle offense took control as they hit a match high .481 for the game. Winthrop never trailed in game three and held a 20-10 lead. The Eagles finished off game three 30-15.
"If we can pass the ball as well as we did tonight and get the ball to our middle hitters within our system it takes the pressure off the rest of the team," head coach Joel McCartney said.
Offensively, sophomore middle hitter Shannon Sitzmann led the Eagles with 20 kills followed by senior middle hitter Taryn Surbaugh with 13 kills.
Defensively, there were three Eagles with double-digit defensive digs. Sophomore libero Pohai Nu'uhiwa, junior setter Kelli Kirkwood and freshman outside hitter Emily Stockman all tallied 10 digs.
Following the match, Winthrop honored its three volleyball senior including setter Emily Heckl, outside hitter Tori Grafeman and Surbaugh.
The three seniors and the Eagles did have one final home contest Tuesday evening in the quarterfinals of the Big South Tournament. The Eagles defeated Charleston Southern to advance to the semifinals of the championship.
