While I commend the recent decisions by both J.P. McKee and Glenn Savage for the letter to the editor and the multi-page listserv that detailed many questionable and important levels of information about the new payment policy, I would like to point out that every single bit of this information came out after the release of the news and opinion stories.
I will kindly remind Mr. McKee and everyone else (especially those in 114 Tillman) that the article I wrote was nothing more than from the prospective of each and every student here at Winthrop. That means I came to my conclusion and got my numbers from the only information I was provided and that was the single sheet of paper I found in my postal box.
In an interview with Rebecca Masters for the Winthrop Close Up, I found out that the decision to switch over to this new payment policy had been in discussion for some time now. Over this past summer the decision was made to enact the new policy. The only thing Winthrop was waiting for was the right time to let the students know. And just so Rebecca Masters knows, my headlines are created by my editor, not me. As a woman who said she worked in newspapers, I would hope you already knew that before confronting me in public about it.
So, we appreciate all of you letting us know this helpful information, but you should have let us known earlier, when the first, initial letter was sent out. Now, playing devil's advocate, I would expect someone out there to say that this information would have been released regardless of the news and opinion stories, but to that I say would it really have been?
My suggestion: before releasing such an important decision when you have obviously had more than enough time to thoroughly inform the entire student body, try getting the information together all at once to release it instead of waiting for the press to pry out all the details.
