Volleyball downs two in-state conference rivals

"We played poorly against a very good College of Charleston team and everyone was quite disappointed with that performance," head coach Joel McCartney said.
"It helped us learn a road we don't want to travel and additionally gave us inspiration for the conference matches over the weekend."
The Eagles started out Friday night in Conway, S.C.
Winthrop 3, Coastal Carolina 0
The Eagles took down the Chanticleers of Coastal Carolina in three games, 30-13, 3-28 and 30-23 Friday evening.
The win was the 150th of head coach Joel McCartney's career at Winthrop.
Coastal posed little trouble to the Eagles in game one as they jumped out to an early 11-3 lead.
Winthrop increased its lead to 10 points at 20-10 and allowed only three points over the remainder of the game as they took game one 30-13.
Winthrop had a few more problems on their hands in game two in a hard fought battle with the Chanticleers.
The Eagles led 4-2, but for a limited time as the two teams were tied at eight, 10, 18 and again at 22.
The Chanticleers were poised to take game two from the Eagles as they led 27-24, but scored only one more point of the final seven and the Eagles took game two 30-28.
Game three was another battle as Coastal led early, but Winthrop gained control after a tie at 16. The Eagles grabbed a 25-20 lead and finished off the Chanticleers in game three 30-23.
Winthrop was led offensively by sophomore middle hitter Shannon Sitzmann who tallied 14 kills with a .520 hitting percentage.
Senior setter Emily Heckl finished the match with 30 assists while sophomore Pohai Nu'uhiwa picked up 15 defensive digs.
Winthrop 3, Charleston Southern 0
The Eagles continued their dominance within conference play as they downed Charleston Southern 30-15, 30-14 and 30-23.
In game one, the Eagles took control early jumping out to a 10-6 lead. Winthrop took the next 10 points and extended their lead to 20-6.
Charleston had no response to the Eagles' attack and Winthrop finished off game one 30-15.
Winthrop stepped up the defensive pressure in game two allowing Charleston only 14 points as the Eagles took game two 30-14.
