With less than two weeks before the Eagles host Clemson University in a rematch of last year's match, the Winthrop men's soccer team defeated High Point at home Wednesday and tied Georgia Southern on the road Saturday to improve their record to 8-1-2 overall and 2-0 in the conference.

Junior midfielder Saidi Isaac scored two goals including the game-winner in the Eagles' conference victory over the High Point Panthers.

"I thought we played well, but was disappointed with our finishing and giving up two goals," head coach Rich Posipanko said.

"It is very hard to play when a team is defending like High Point."

High Point got on the board first in the 39th minute on a goal by Chris Archer who put home a rebound off an initial cross.

Isaac scored his first goal of the game in the 43rd minute on an assist from sophomore defender Henry Kalungi and senior midfielder David Kenga.

Kenga is currently ranked first in the nation in assists per game with .9.

"Kenga is having the best year since he has been at Winthrop," Posipanko said.

"His play is much more consistent then in past years. He has all the tools to be very good, he just needs to be prepared mentally. There is no question he is a very valuable player for us."

Sophomore forward Daniel Revivo gave Winthrop the lead in the 63rd minute on his sixth goal of the year.

Less than two minutes later at 64:02, Isaac increased the Winthrop lead to 3-1 with his 13th goal of the season.

High Point cut into the Winthrop lead in the 67th minute as Archer tallied his second goal of the match.

Winthrop held strong over the last 20 minutes and came away with their second conference victory of the year, 3-2.

Winthrop 1, Georgia Southern 1

The Eagles stepped out of conference play Saturday afternoon to travel to Georgia Southern.

"GSU is not a high scoring team, so they play a lot of bodies on defense," Posipanko said. "They are very difficult to play at home."

The first half of the match produced no scoring from either team, but the Eagles outshot Georgia Southern 5-4.

After a Georgia Southern foul, Revivo tallied the first goal of the match in the 76th minute. Winthrop was set up with a 25-yard free kick. Revivo ripped the kick past the keeper to put Winthrop up 1-0.

Georgia Southern's Jon Cox knotted the match at one in the 87th minute when he put home the rebound from his original shot.
