Women's soccer downs Austin Peay, loses to Samford

The Winthrop women's soccer team continued its pattern of splitting its two weekend games, as they blanked Austin Peay University, 3-0, and dropped a 1-0 decision to Samford University.
Winthrop 3, Austin Peay 0
Winthrop got a two-assist contribution from senior midfielder Jennifer Hensley as they pitched a shutout of Austin Peay in their opening game of the Barber's Classic this past weekend at Samford University.
Winthrop got on the board early, as Hensley picked up her first assist of the night when she found sophomore forward Chelsea White who beat Governor goalkeeper Michelle Smith one-on-one to put the Eagles up 1-0.
Winthrop went into the locker room on a high note as they added an insurance goal in the 44th minute of the match. Freshman midfielder Katie Schraudenback placed a pass by Smith and freshman forward Jessica Hausfeld drilled it into the back of the net to put Winthrop up 2-0.
In the second half, Austin Peay outshot the Eagles 9-5, but were unable to put anything past sophomore goalkeeper Dimitra Poulos who notched her second shutout in the last three games.
Winthrop added another goal in the 90th minute when Hensley found sophomore forward Erin Foote who chipped it over Smith's outstretched hands.
The win sent Winthrop into the championship of the Barber's Classic against host Samford University.

Winthrop received a dissapointing defeat at the hands of the Samford Bulldogs as they gave up a goal in the 86th minute to drop the game 1-0.
Samford had a number of chances early on in the game, but the Winthrop defense held strong, anchored by Poulos and kept the Bulldogs off the scoreboard.
In the second half, the Eagles were unable to amount any time of offensive pressure. They fired off only one shot and did not make the Samford goalkeeper make any saves.
Off a free kick, Samford's Sara Geiger headed the ball past Poulos for the 1-0 lead and subsequent victory.
