If students are interested in a free laugh, then they should consider checking out the Comedy X tour when it makes a stop at Winthrop on Sept. 21.

The Comedy X Tour, featuring Steve Hofstetter, Dave O'Gara and Mike Trainor, is coming to Winthrop, free of charge.

The show will begin at 8 p.m. in Tillman Auditorium. Admission is free.

This tour began at the University of Rhode Island on Sept. 5 and will end at Winthrop on Sept. 21. Other colleges chosen to be on the tour include Boise State University, Kansas State University and Florida State University.

According to Hofstetter, Winthrop was chosen to be included in the tour because of DSU's reputation.

"Winthrop has an impressive student union to be such a small school," Hofstetter said. "They really care about their programming."

Students on the DSU board are enthusiastic about hosting the tour.

"They specifically came to Winthrop and offered the show for free because of what they heard of the school as a whole," Brooke Rash, chair of comedy and novelty for DSU. "Students will basically be getting a five-star comedy for free."

Boyd Jones, director of campus programming is also looking forward to this tour. "We are really excited about the fact they picked 11 campuses around the country, and they picked us as one the campuses," Jones said. "This gives Winthrop students even more of an incentive to come, as we have the opportunity to be one of the few colleges to have the privilege of hosting the Comedy X Tour."

Hofstetter, headlining the show, has been featured on CollegeHumor.com and his first live album, "Cure for the Cable Guy", was a hit as it debuted as number 22 on Billboard's comedy charts. He is also the host of "Four Quotas" on Sirius Satellite Radio, and has a weekly humor column for both SportsIllustrated.com and NHL.com.

Because this show is featuring three different comedians, it will have a variety of different styles and may be appealing to higher number of students. Hofstetter has a dry sense of humor, he is passionate and loves to discuss social criticism. O'Gara is more in your face with his jokes, and Trainor has high energy and is very animated.

Both Trainor and O'Gara co-hosts and produces "Four Quotas" for Sirius Satellite Radio. O'Gara has headlined clubs such as Charlie Goodnight's, The Farmhouse, Hambone's and many other clubs throughout North Carolina.

According to Hofstetter, watching comedy on TV does not give the viewer the same experience as seeing a live performance.

"Its like the difference between going to a ball game and watching it on sports center," he said. "Laughter is communal. I rarely laugh out loud when I'm sitting in front of the TV by myself."

Hofstetter also prides himself in offering a different type of comedy.

"My style of comedy is different from others in that it is funny, but also informative," Hofstetter said.   He also noted that with his comedy, he wants to give his audience something to think about in the end.

"I've always wanted to perform at Winthrop," Hofstetter said. "It should be a fantastic show."
