Volleyball starts strong in first of four tournaments

In the first of four tournaments to kick off the season, the Winthrop volleyball team won two of their three matches to open the season.
Winthrop 3, Wisconsin-Milwaukee 2
Friday, Aug. 25
The Winthrop volleyball team overcame a two-set deficit and senior Taryn Surbaugh tied her career-high with 20 kills to lead the Eagles to a 3-2 win over Wisconsin-Milwaukee Friday night in the opening round of the 2006 Illini Classic in Champaign, IL.
The Eagles got off to a slow start as the Panthers opened a 17-10 lead in the first game. Winthrop, who was voted the preseason favorite to capture its fifth straight Big South Conference title, fought back to take the lead with the scoreboard showing 23-20, but Wisconsin-Milwaukee regained the lead and went on to win the game 30-28.
Neither team was able to open a large lead in the second game until the Panthers got a 27-24 advantage and marched to take the second game by a 30-26 score.
The Eagles began their comeback early in the third game as they took an 8-1 lead. Wisconsin-Milwaukee, who was picked to win the Horizon Conference for the fourth straight year, kept fighting as it reduced the Eagle lead to one point at 23-22, but Winthrop closed out the game 30-27 with a kill by senior outside hitter Tori Grafeman.
The Eagles also had a strong start in the fourth game as they opened a 13-3 lead. Winthrop then maintained the lead to take game four 30-25 and send the match to a decisive fifth game.
The Eagles jumped on top of Wisconsin-Milwaukee in the fifth game as they took a 7-3 lead. The Panthers cut the deficit to 9-8, but the Eagles held strong to close out the game 15-9 and capture its first win of the season as senior outside hitter Taryn Surbaugh recorded the last of her 20 kills of the match.
Surbaugh led Winthrop in kills with 20 while hitting .333 for the match. She also played strong at the net defensively with nine block assists.
Grafeman, along with redshirt sophomore middle hitter Shannon Sitzmann and freshman outside hitter Emily Stockman recorded double-digit numbers in kills as well.
