There is a good chance you have read about them, heard about them, or you are probably one of the millions of users who have one. That's right; I'm talking about Facebook and Myspace.
Over the past two years, Facebook and Myspace have blown up to incredible sizes with millions of users registered on both sites. Myspace alone has over 105 million profiles on the Internet.
"I have both a Myspace and a Facebook account and I play on both of them everyday. The idea to have personal pages for each person as a way to keep in contact was just plain ingenious. I salute the creators of both who are probably rolling in cash by now," said Tiffany Swansig, sophomore sociology major.
Although both profile sharing sites have many of the same features, there are some differences that keep students logging on to one instead of the other.
Myspace, unlike Facebook, houses the ability to add a background image or design to any user's page. Multiple sites around the Internet have pre-made layouts already designed and users simply copy a code and post it on their page. The image automatically appears along with the profile. You can also custom make your own background to show your own pictures or interests.
"One of the things I don't like about Facebook is that all the profiles are the same. It's just basic black text on a white background and after a short time, it's gets boring to look at and I lose interest, no matter whose page it is," said Damien Hoffman, freshman pre-major. "I like that with Myspace, you can change your background everyday and it shows other people a little bit more about your taste and interests."
However, although Facebook may lack a colorful background, it also has features that Myspace is lacking. One of those features is the being able to put up a new status each time you log on. Pre selected statuses, such as "in the library" or "out at a party," are available to use or you can type in your own status to let others know where you are at or how you are feeling.
