The first day of school is creeping up, and the Winthrop campus is beginning to buzz to life yet again for another year.
However, students are not the only ones returning to campus. Dinkins Student Union is bringing over 10 entertainment acts to campus during the first week of school in order to get students out of their rooms, meeting new people and getting pumped about the upcoming year.
"The purpose of Welcome Week is to pour a hot bucket of Winthrop spirit over the entire freshman class," Erika Weed, junior IMC major and DSU Public Relations chair, said.
Welcome Week entertainment starts August 18 and will continue through Aug 27. Events include everything from Irish rock bands to acrobats to blues bands to comedians.
The incoming freshman class is the biggest one Winthrop has had yet.
"Because this is the largest freshman class, we have to make an impact during Welcome Week," Boyd Jones, director of campus programs, said. "This first week really sets the tone of what kind of year they are going to have, and we want to make it a good one."
Even though DSU can not always bring in popular artist, they try to havefrequent shows.
"We might not bring in big names, but we try to have something fun going on every weekend," Jones said.
Kicking off Welcome Week at 8 p.m. on August 18, will be an ice cream social in McBryde Hall featuring Playfair, the ultimate icebreaker. This activity will allow freshmen to meet new people.
The following day, the Chinese Golden Dragon Acrobats will be performing in Byrnes Auditorium at 8 p.m.
"I've seen the Golden Dragon Acrobats at Disney World and they are amazing," Chris Brown, senior spanish major and DSU lecture chair, said.
Other members of DSU are pumped about the acrobat's performance as well.
"I'm also excited about the Chinese Golden Dragon Acrobats because it is something completely new and fresh," Brandy Hughes, president of DSU and senior human crimonology and political science major, said.
Coming next will be spoken word artist, Kirk Nugent performing with rising slam poetry artist, Asia.
